Five ways to clean up your snail mail

These days we spend a lot of time managing our email inboxes, but what about the snail mailbox? You can de-clutter your mailbox with some easy techniques that reduce unwanted paper and streamline what you get delivered to you.

After moving into our new house a couple of years ago, I found that our postal mailbox was overflowing with junk mail, circulars and paper bills. Sorting through the mail each day and keeping track of what came in became an annoying task and a recipe for misplaced or discarded bills or important letters.

DEH-P5900IB.jpg

For the consumers with tighter grips on their wallets, Pioneer has new lines of single-CD players to meet simpler needs. Starting at $100, the various lines mix and match a laundry list of features including:

• XM/Sirius support on all models
• Direct iPod control
• USB connectivity (in case your “iPod” is a flash drive)
• Bluetooth compatibility
• Auxiliary inputs
• The awkwardly-titled “rotary commander” replacing the old and outdated volume control knob

Find local deals with BidNearBy

Find and compare deals from local stores, Craigslist, eBay, Amazon, and more with BidNearBy.com, a Google maps mashup.

Here’s how it works: just type in your zip code (they’ve already geo-tagged you via your IP address, but it’s not absolutely perfect), then type in what you’re looking for. BidNearBy then will retrieve all the corresponding results from your area within a maximum 200-mile radius, so you can see exactly how well you might fare by keeping it local, or by going online.

Secure your network, NSA-style

If you’re nutso for network security, the NSA’s 60 Minute Network Security Guide PDF (yes, that NSA) should get your network up to brick wall status in – apparently – 60 minutes.

The guide, which checks in at just under 50 pages, is serious about airtight network security, urging you, for example, to enforce a password history of at least 24 different 12+ character passwords, swapping out passwords at least once every 90 days. The free PDF covers Windows and Unix security setups. If you give it a look, let us know how your network measures up to the NSA’s specifications in the comments.

Send Anonymous Text Messages

I can think of a few good uses of this…

/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/anontxt.pngEver want to text someone anonymously? Hit up AnonTxt and just enter in an alias, a subject, and the message itself, and it’ll be quickly sped to the cellphone number of your choosing.

Of course, the message appends "anontxt" to the sender’s name, so the recipient knows where it’s from. So if you really want to spoof someone’s phone—say to make your co-worker think your boss is flirting with her—you’ll have to look elsewhere. And you can contact anontxt to block your number if someone is pranking you repeatedly. – Jason Chen

LEDs: Better than Paint?

I like this idea (even if I’ll never see it realized)

Pink, meet blue. Blue, meet pink. Just 3 LEDs change the color of this entire kitchen We like it more than painting, and the "coat" will last 4,000 days before burnout. – Mark Wilson
